The enamel layer on each of your teeth is made from densely packed microscopic mineral crystal structures that give your teeth the durability to bite off, chew, and grind your food. Unfortunately, there are extreme situations where an accidental fall or blow to the face can actually crack one of your teeth. Sometimes a crack can be so severe that the tooth must be extracted so it can be effectively replaced by a bridge.

A bridge is basically a single piece of dental work, that mimics the appearance of three teeth. The two outermost teeth are actually crowns that are fused onto a false tooth designed to fill the void.

The first step in replacing the tooth with a bridge is to assess the integrity of the neighboring teeth to make sure they are healthy enough to form abutments. Next, the dentist will remove the majority of enamel layer of each tooth. leaving a small post-like structure. The two abutments that are formed will eventually serve to anchor the bridge in your mouth.

Then your Edward B. Miller, DDS dentist will create an impressing of the abutments as well as the void and the corresponding teeth in your bite pattern. This is sent to a dental lab as a guide to help them custom make your new bridge. Then the dentist will secure hard plastic temporary crowns over top of each abutment to protect them.

When your bridge is completed Edward B. Miller, DDS will call you to schedule your second procedure. The temporary crowns are removed and your new permanent bridge will be cemented in place.

If you have a severely cracked tooth, you should call Edward B. Miller, DDS immediately, at 972-298-6131 to explore your treatment and restoration options.
