We’ve all been there. Maybe you are camping, hiking, or at a concert, or maybe you are at your desk at work. You’ve had a snack or lunch, or maybe you just have that feeling of an unclean mouth. You want to brush, but you can’t. So, what are your options?

Usually someone will have bottled water on hand, or there will be a drinking fountain or water fountain nearby. At the very least, you can give your mouth a good, vigorous rinse to remove any loose food debris. A paper towel or your finger make good impromptu toothbrushes, and a little salt or baking soda can serve as a substitute for toothpaste if necessary. If you can lay your hands an apple, or some carrots or celery, they can help remove the film from your teeth. It’s not a bad idea to keep some sugarless gum on hand for after meals. Chewing gum stimulates the production of saliva, which helps to rinse your mouth and neutralize the acids from your foods and drinks.

Of course, there is not real substitute for brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and seeing our doctor twice a year for your regular cleanings and exams.
